We’ve partnered with Winsor & Newton to bring you interviews with top designers from around the globe. Each designer was given a 0.8 WN Fineliner to sketch answers to a variety of questions.
In this edition of Design Dialogues, we spoke with Nothing, a British consumer electronics company with a global design footprint, operating out of London and Shenzhen. The London team, led by Adam Bates, focuses on industrial and experiential design, working closely with technologists to develop future-facing products. Using only a pen, here are their responses.
@nothing is a British consumer electronics company redefining tech through design-led innovation and global collaboration. Founded by Carl Pei, ex co-founder of OnePlus, and backed by figures like Tony Fadell and Teenage Engineering, the company combines cutting-edge technology with a strong design sensibility. Nothing’s design efforts are centred in its London studio led by Adam Bates, formerly of Dyson, who is building a multidisciplinary team. This distributed setup allows the brand to harness diverse thinking and agile workflows to deliver distinctive, forward-thinking products.
The launch of the Nothing Phone (1) in 2022 marked a bold debut, featuring the glyph interface, a rear lighting system for notifications that blends functionality with expression. This focus on playful, human-centred design is central to the studio’s approach, alongside a commitment to sustainability through recycled and bio-based materials. Working in intense design sprints across time zones, the team balances experimentation with precision, informed by cultural research and user feedback. As the studio expands, Bates sees an opportunity to build a more open and optimistic tech ecosystem, one that welcomes creative partnerships, embraces challenges, and pushes for long-term impact beyond the screen.
